Entrion Wind Completes ENOVA Feasibility Study Demonstrating FRP Cost and Carbon Advantages

Study finds the FRP technology can reduce foundation costs, lower LCOE and extend monopile use into deeper water.

KRISTIANSAND, Norway — Entrion Wind has completed an ENOVA-supported feasibility study demonstrating the technical and economic potential of its Fully Restrained Platform (FRP) foundation for deeper-water offshore wind development.
The study evaluated an FRP foundation supporting a 15 MW wind turbine at approximately 75 meters water depth in Norway’s Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind area and compared it directly with an XXL monopile and a conventional jacket foundation designed for the same conditions.
The work was carried out by Entrion Wind together with C2WIND, GeoProvider, Global Maritime and cDynamics, selected for their expertise and experience in offshore wind engineering. The study examined foundation design, geotechnical and metocean conditions, dynamic performance, mooring design, transportation and installation, environmental impact and project economics.
The results show that the FRP delivered the lowest expected foundation CAPEX, lowest projected LCOE and lowest estimated carbon footprint of the three concepts evaluated.
Key findings include:
€0.84 million/MW foundation CAPEX for FRP at P50, compared with €1.02 million/MW for the XXL monopile and €1.10 million/MW for the jacket.
€81.29/MWh projected LCOE, compared with €84.05/MWh and €85.34/MWh respectively.
2,539 tonnes of primary structural steel, compared with 4,802 tonnes for the XXL monopile and 3,982 tonnes for the jacket.
4,982 tCO₂e estimated carbon footprint per foundation, less than half that of either alternative.
For the SNII reference development, the analysis found that the FRP reduces expected LCOE by approximately €2.8 to €4.0/MWh compared with the alternatives before considering the additional effect of carbon tariffs.
Morten Lind, Board Member & Advisor at Entrion Wind, said:
“This study shows there is another answer to the challenge of deeper water. Instead of simply making foundations larger and heavier, FRP changes how the loads are managed. The result is a technically viable foundation that can use significantly less steel while reducing cost, carbon emissions and projected LCOE.”
The FRP uses pretensioned mooring lines to share environmental loads with the monopile, reducing bending demand and allowing a lighter foundation. For the SNII reference design, the system uses an 8-meter-diameter monopile at approximately 75 meters water depth.
The study also evaluated the complete turbine, foundation, mooring and anchor system under dynamic, ultimate and accidental conditions, including the loss of one mooring line. The analysis supported the technical feasibility of the FRP concept under the conditions assessed.
Overall, the report concludes that the FRP provides a technically and economically viable foundation solution for deeper-water sites such as SNII, where conventional bottom-fixed alternatives become increasingly heavy and costly.
